It is so super and mega as the name says? In fact, it is (considering the ironic style of all these “Super Mega’s”). But it’s more than just making fun; underneath a cartoonish PS3 graphics there’s a solid baseball engine.
Super Mega Baseball doesn’t look very serious. Its graphical part is cartoonish, with no ambition to be photorealistic. So the environment includes stadiums and audience, weather and nature. This look would suit a funny arcade.
So it is with the sounds. The voices are pitched (sorry for the pun) and sound childish or cartoonish too. But as we distract from voices and listen to bats, balls or running feet, it becomes closer to the truth than we imagined.
Alas, PS3 version has some restrictions. For example, real resolution is limited to 720p to make sure the hardware will run it. But all the game is still here. And yes, if you wondered if you could make a player your avatar by taking real pictures, then yes, you can.
The fun starts with the names. The main character’s name is Hammer Longballo, and it’s not the funniest. The details will distract you all the way, sometimes making laugh out loud.
As for the game process, it offers all the modes a regular sports game offers. Play successfully to get rewards and level up, hire coaches to level up your team, make your character mirror you or be what you’d like to.
As you select the team you play in a single offline game, you can see its strength and weaknesses. Some teams are balanced, some are good at power hitting, pitching, defense, or contacts, but lose in other disciplines.
Select the difficulty level measured in Egos, from 1 to 100. The more Ego you invest, the harder it is to play, but it pays.
As the developers kept in mind the default DUALSHOCK while making this game, it shouldn’t cause any troubles. If you want to inquire anything during the game, you can just press pause and see the menu of controls. And if you prefer to learn all controls beforehand, it’s in the game.
To get a reminder while playing, press “START” on the controller and go to “How to play” to get a complete help.
Replay Value: 5
Select your teams. Play online. Play with your local friends. Sports games are inexhaustible, so it will take you long to try all the modes and all the combinations. Also, you’ll enjoy the process (or at least get used to it).
There are many rival games for PS4, but if you’re bound to your PS3, Super Mega Baseball has little competition as powerful and great. So you can enjoy it for long.
Super Mega Baseball is really super. Though the experience may be tougher with PS4, the PS3 version is as decent, and it has all we like in this game.
Super Mega Baseball for PS3 may fall short of screen resolution, but it still brings a lot of fun to anyone even a little into baseball or sports gaming.
Pros : Cool drawn graphics
Little space on disk
Good baseball simulation
Creative naming within the game
Cons : PS3 version can’t boast really great graphics
Multiplayer mode is only local
Replay Value 5.0
