Cities: Skylines is a simulation video game that was developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive in 2015, initially for platforms such as Windows, Linux, and OSX. As of now, the video game can be played on a larger number of platforms, including PlayStation and Xbox.

Graphics: 5

The minimum CPU requirements for Cities: Skylines are either an Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.0GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+, 3.2GHz with a 4GB RAM and 4 GB worth of free disk space for it to function smoothly on its highest settings. Playing the game on low graphics settings does not hinder the overall gaming experience; it does, however, differ slightly from high graphic settings in how vibrant the colours are, as well as the detailing of all the simulations. Overall, the game has good graphics.

Gameplay: 4.5

Much like other simulation video games, Cities: Skylines starts off with the player having a sum of money and a space of land to build a city on. The player can establish buildings and roads within the space and create the foundations for a fully functional city, complete with the ability to install and maintain sewage systems and other basic needs like power supply and water supply.

Upon expanding past certain population levels, the player can unlock newer and more complex building options to ensure the influx of residents. Cities: Skylines also allows its players the feature of dividing the city into separate districts, which each generate a particular resource, or accomplish one specific function.

Along with this feature, the game has also enabled players to construct a complex road transport system with features from Colossal Order’s previous video game, Cities In Motion. This helps the players to manage the traffic flow within the city. With these features, Cities: Skylines engages players to manage and improve the city’s condition to maintain a steady inflow of more residents.

Controls: 4.5

Cities: Skylines follows the usual controls W, A, S, D on a keyboard. The game has customisable settings for its controls, but the basic default controls are as follows.

The keys W, A, S, D, are to scroll up, down, left, and right respectively. The Z key is to zoom in, and X key is to zoom out. The default controls R key and End key pan the camera upwards and downwards respectively. The Escape key pauses the game, and the Y key helps to select areas in the game.

Replay Value: 4.5

The replay value of Cities: Skylines has rocketed to over 9000 according to most of its players. What is so replay-worthy about this game is the fact that players have the power to do anything with it. There are no restrictions on how you can build a city, which leaves a players’ imagination as their only limit.

Conclusion

Colossal Order was in the red when they first came up with Cities: Skylines since SimCity had been sweeping the market with its classic city-building simulation. However, in 2013, SimCity saw disaster, and Colossal Order made there move. As of now, there are quite a lot of positive reviews on Cities: Skylines. Colossal Order has developed numerous free updates for the game. They have also come up with five paid expansion packs with added features for the players to exploit.

Conclusion

Cities: Skylines has definitely succeeded SimCity. Although the game has been termed as “unloseable” by some of its players, it is extremely successful in inspiring interest in players and engaging them unfailingly.

Pros : Creativity potential is endless
Large area to build city in
Realistic gameplay

Cons : Mindless and quite unchallenging to players after a point

Graphics 5.0

Controls 4.5
